What is Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) ?

Medications for ASD Symptoms

While medications don’t cure ASD, they can help manage specific symptoms such as irritability, anxiety, and repetitive behaviours:

Antipsychotics (e.g., Risperidone, Aripiprazole):

Block dopamine (and sometimes serotonin) receptors to help regulate mood and behaviour. Target Irritability, aggression, self-injury, and severe tantrums.

Selective Serotonin Re-uptake Inhibitors (SSRIs) (e.g., Fluoxetine, Sertraline)

Increase serotonin levels by blocking its reuptake in the brain and targets anxiety, depression, obsessive-compulsive behaviours, and repetitive behaviours.

Stimulants (e.g., Adderall)

Increase dopamine and norepinephrine activity in the prefrontal cortex. Target Inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity (often when ADHD symptoms co-occur).

Anti-Anxiety Medications (e.g., Benzodiazepines, Buspirone)

Target acute anxiety and panic symptoms.

Anticonvulsants (e.g., Valproate, Lamotrigine)

Stabilize neural membrane excitability via various ion channel effects. Used for seizure control (in ASD with comorbid epilepsy), mood stabilization

Emerging Brain Stimulation Techniques for Autism

Invasive techniques

Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS)

A neurosurgical procedure in which electrodes are implanted into targeted brain regions. DBS has been explored in very severe ASD cases—particularly those with self-injurious behaviours or other challenging symptoms—when other treatments have failed.

Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT)

Under anesthesia, brief controlled electrical currents induce therapeutic seizures. It is rarely used in autism treatment and is generally reserved for extreme cases of ASD after all other interventions have failed.

Non-invasive techniques

Uses magnetic pulses to stimulate specific brain areas. It has shown promise in improving social cognition and reducing repetitive behaviours in some individuals with ASD.
